The latest data reveal that the European Union’s vital tourism sector turned the corner in 2010, following a two-year slump on the back of the economic and financial crises, and the outlook is bright for 2011. According to a
Eurobarometer survey on the attitudes of Europeans towards tourism , which interviewed over 30 000 randomly selected Europeans aged 15 and over, almost three-quarters (73%) of EU citizens said they had travelled, either for business or private purposes, at least once in 2010. Some 68% stated that they travelled for private reasons, up a full 3% on 2009. This confirms the recovery in 2010 already registered by Eurostat. For example, the number of nights spent at hotels and similar establishments increased by 2.8% in 2010, following two years of negative growth.
