Environmental features

1. Management

  • Our purchasing policies aim to minimize waste and the transportation of goods.
  • We encourage and supply guests with information for the use of public transport.
  • We rent out bicycles.
  • We use “green” cleaning agents with automatic dispensers.
  • Washing machines use an automatic washing powder dispenser.
  • We do not use drain cleaners, only hot water.
  • We monitor the total consumption of water, hot water, heat, and electricity every week.
  • We do not use pesticides.

2. Waste

  • Hostel staff and guests recycle: glass, paper, cardboard, food, cans and metal.
  • Waste from fruit and vegetables are composted.

3. Water

  • The toilets flush with only 7 litres.
  • Showers are regulated to a maximum of 9 litres per minute.

4. Energy

  • Heating: central regulations and lower temperatures at nights.
  • Electricity: energy saving bulbs and infra-red sensors are used where possible. Regulation of ventilation by timer.
  • We optimize electronic installations, and have an energy policy when buying new ones.
  • Key-card at the guest’s room to activate heating and electricity.

5. Information

  • Guests: we show environmental results and achievements and publish environmental guidelines.
  • Staff: we inform and ensure correct environmental behaviour. Training of new staff.
  • Feedback and proposals for improvement.

 

Environmental impact

We have achieved the eco label “The Green Key” since 1996 (see link at our homepage: www.kalundborg-vandrerhjem.dk)

 

Economic/financial impact

We have financial savings as a result of our environmental policy. The marginal savings are low in relation to the cost.
