Environmental features

1. The Hostel had its own Environmental Policy since 2000 and made an effort to involve the guests from the beginning with simple and clear instructions of “how” and “why”. Special signage for sorting waste and using water etc. was designed and produced for all Hostels in Iceland to be used. Iinformation and guidance on the surrounding nature.

2. We listen carefully to our guests needs and ideas about travelling in Iceland. We provide information on nature protection and Iceland's wilderness areas. In 2002, Reykjavík City Hostel received the yearly "City of Reykjavík Environmental Award" for its contribution to environmental protection. In 2003, the Icelandic Tourist Board selected HI Iceland as the Travel Service Company of the Year for its work on environmental issues.

3. In 2004, Reykjavik City Hostel was certificated by the Nordic Ecolabel The Swan. The Swan is the official Ecolabel of the Nordic countries. This was also good publicity and good for staff and guest morale. It also led to cost savings.

4. HI Iceland decided in 2003 that all Icelandic HI Hostels who fulfil certain conditions in environmental work would receive permission to be called Green Hostels and to use an environmental logo, which the organization issues.

Environmental impact

A positive impact on the image of the Hostel (a quality accommodation with social and green profile). “Green” became part of Quality in the minds of the guests.

The Hostel Team became more aware of the aim when they had an environmental system connecting many of their activities.

In our guests surveys, they noticed Reykjavík to be a green hostel before arriving and would like to see more and know more about how/why/what.

Economic/financial impact

The environmental system has sharpened the focus for purchasing and activated savings.

Environmental cleaning methods have made a huge cost saving impact
